An organic farmer, his family's hour of need, and why they represent the blindingly bright future of Israel's North.
In the heart of the Western Galilee, a once-neglected region has transformed into a thriving agricultural community with the support of Jewish National Fund-USA. This is the story of Dor Pintel, a young farmer, his family, and the incredible support network that arose to protect them in their hour of need.
Just over a year ago, Dor and his family took on the monumental task of reclaiming a piece of land untouched for more than five decades. The journey was anything but easy. “We felt like pioneers,” Dor shared, reflecting on the early days of the farm. Their hard work bore fruit—literally—as they began supplying organic fresh fruits and vegetables to hundreds of families each week. Despite living near the Lebanese border and enduring relentless rocket and drone attacks, the family stayed, driven by their mission to cultivate the land and bring a sense of normalcy to their community.
However, the challenges of living and farming in a war zone took a toll. “For months, I sought a bomb shelter to protect my family and my team,” Dor recounted. “But my requests went unanswered.” The situation reached a breaking point on October 6, 2024, when missile debris fell dangerously close to Dor and his young daughter as they worked on the farm. Fear for his family’s safety left Dor in despair, uncertain if he could continue his work without risking their lives.
The turning point came just days later, on October 8, during a meeting at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel. Dor met representatives from Jewish National Fund-USA, including its President, Deb Lust Zaluda, and CEO Russell F. Robinson. Moved by Dor’s plight, the organization immediately sprang into action. A bomb shelter was swiftly delivered to the farm. This act of kindness and urgency was more than just a safety measure; it was a lifeline.
“Your generosity has provided us with more than just protection,” Dor expressed in a heartfelt letter. “It’s a symbol of hope, safety, and support. It reminds us that we are not alone in this struggle.”
The story doesn’t end there. In the coming days, a group of American volunteers will arrive to paint the bomb shelter, turning it into a vibrant emblem of friendship and solidarity. This act of collaboration encapsulates the essence of Jewish National Fund-USA’s mission: building a stronger, safer Israel through partnerships and shared purpose.

Zaluda, reflecting on this journey, emphasized the significance of community, action and impact. “This is the story of a young man, coincidentally who I have known for years, who started with nothing, turned a neglected piece of land into one of the great organic farms of the future, and found himself faced with unimaginable challenges. Yet, through the circle of friendship and support, he can now look ahead with renewed hope. This is what we’re all about.”
As the year draws to a close, Jewish National Fund-USA continues to call for support to place more bomb shelters where they’re needed most. “Protecting families like Dor’s is at the core of what we do, and will help ensure a future for all Israelis” Zaluda said. “Before December 31, donate a bomb shelter at jnf.org/bombshelters. Protect a family. Be part of this circle of life.”
Dor’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from community and the impact of stepping up for those in need. Through determination, compassion, and the unwavering support of organizations like Jewish National Fund-USA, the roots of resilience grow deeper every day in the Western Galilee.
